Members Weekend Update

Hello everyone,

I am going to start sending an email out every Sunday to let everyone know of any changes, plans, and what not for the upcoming week.

-This week we will be closed on Monday morning (2/20/12) because of President's Day. We will resume our normal schedule at 12:15pm on Monday.

-We are also starting a little kids class on Saturday (2/25/12) at 10:00 am. Ginny Lee suggested it and I'm happy to get it going. This class is for the really little ones. Ages 3-5. I might be able to fit in 6 and 7 year olds, but I have be sure there are enough older ones. All you parents know that a few years in kids makes a big difference. I'm looking to get a full on kids mma program. Obviously safety then fun are our objectives with our kids program. For anybody else interested, please let me know. I would love to have an after school program started by March 15th. The program will consist of gi and no gi grappling and also striking (with no contact). Our emphasis is on developing technique, fitness, athleticism,  self confidence, self discipline, concentration, and an indomitable spirit. I have always wanted to teach kids and I can't express how excited I am to get this class going!

-I would also like for all of you to reach out to any of those around you who you know needs to get into shape or has an interest in the martial arts. I have been very pleased with the growth of our academy in the past 4 months. I really want to keep the membership growing, so we can take on a new space, offer more classes, and share our great training with more people. There is no better way to get new members than having our current members who are satisfied bring in their friends and family. Anybody who brings in a person who signs up will receive a free month of training or a free private lesson with the instructor of your choice. Our goal is 40 new members by April 1st. Please help us make it happen!

I look forward to seeing everybody in the gym making progress this week. Any questions, ideas, or suggestions don't be afraid to talk to me or any of the staff. We are all here to make your training experience the best one possible.

One Love!

Erik

Online Signing Up
Hi Everyone,

As I'm sure most of you have seen in the evening classes we are starting to have some very busy hours at the academy. I want every person to start signing up for their classes online, so we don't overbook. The CrossFit class is capped at 8.  The Striking and Grappling classes can hold more people and we hope to see the mats full. If you don't sign up online for the CrossFit and the class is full you will have to come back for a later class or the next day. Remember that if you sign up and can't make it, you must cancel before 12 hours of the scheduled class time. If you don't cancel soon enough you will be charged a class credit. If you have an unlimited membership and sign up and don't show up or early cancel you will be charged $20 to your credit card. We are doing this to maintain the quality of the training environment for all the students.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Blog and Class Schedule Changes
Hi everybody. I just wanted to fill everybody in on some changes here at Mushin.

Some of you might be wondering where the Workout of the Day has been. We now have a CrossFit links and all of our WOD will be located there. We will still be doing blog posts here, but the WOD will be on the CrossFit link located on the top of the page next to Blog.

Also we will me modifying our schedule once again. I'm trying to find the right balance of classes to offer. Based upon attendance so far, I'm modifying our morning and afternoon schedules. The morning and afternoon classes will now be mixed level classes, meaning both beginner and advanced students can come to the class. The classes will stress sound fundamentals and hard work, but we will be sure that everybody benefits from the class. Hopefully we can do both beginner and advanced again, but I want to get the numbers up in both of them.

I have been very please with the attendance in the evening classes. We will be offering the classes in a different format from now on. Everyone will do the warm up together and then 2 instructors will divide the group. We will have beginner and advanced levels training at the same time on the same mat. The emphasis will be on the beginner group making their own  improvements moving up to the advanced level and those at the advanced levels moving on to mastery of the skills they are practicing.

We will have four class hours during the week. Morning Martial Arts classes will be offered as mixed level classes on Monday-Thursday at 6:45am. Afternoon Martial Arts classes will be offered as mixed level classes on Monday-Friday at 12:15pm. Evening Martial Arts classes will be mixed levels offered at 6:30pm and 7:30pm. Saturdays will have mixed level classes at 10:00am and 11:30am.

Our CrossFit offerings will be the same. Please refer to the schedule starting this coming Monday to see all the changes.

Other news is that I'm looking to start a kids program. Doing a parent/child class one weekend day per week and developing an after school program. For all those interested in this program for your kids, please talk to me in person or send me a message at erikowings@mac.com.

One Love!

Eat Grass Fed Products
If you aren't a vegetarian and you eat red meat, then you should make it a point to eat grass fed beef and lamb. If you eat dairy, you should make sure your dairy source is from a grass fed cow or goat. You want to make sure that it is grass fed throughout it's life and not just for a short time period before it is slaughtered. Yes, even the grass fed industry can have some dirty tricks up it's sleeve. From my experience almost all the farmers I have met are very open and honest. I think that they are happy to answer your questions and concerns because they are proud of their products. One of the keys to finding good grass fed beef is going to a local farmer's market or farm and getting to know the farmers.

The reasons for eating grass fed beef over grain fed commercial beef are really simple and easy to understand. Cows' natural diet consists of grass. If they eat grass they grow up healthy and strong with fully functioning immune systems. If they are fed grain they get fat quickly and their immune system crashes (sorta like we do). They requires that we give them antibiotics. The commercial beef industry is full of dirty tricks to cover up their ways of offering an inferior product. Don't let USDA Grade A or any of the other stuff they may list fool you that what they are offering you is in no way the same healthy product as grass fed beef. Think about what eating grass does in terms of fatty acids in the cow's tissue. Grass absorbs sunlight the same way plankton does. Fish high in Omega 3s essentially owe all that Omega 3 oil in their system to the food chain they are involved in, although back to those sunlight absorbing plankton. The same goes for beef. The beef that eats grass has a completely different fatty acid profile in it's tissue. This is also the reason why you shouldn't eat farmed fish. Amongst other reasons, they are removed from that delicate food chain and don't have the same concentration of Omega 3s.

I hope all of this makes sense and I hope all of you make the switch to grass fed now.

One Love!

The Definitive DIet Guide
I always get questions about how to eat properly. I always tell people how to do this free of charge. Funny thing is that once I tell them, they continue to ask me questions about certain foods and diets, etc. I usually repeat what I told them and they usually come back with more questions. I then give up and tell them that their plan sounds great. I'm convinced that most people don't like to look at things as they really are. I think proper diet in theory is ridiculously simple. For all of those who still don't know, here is a proper diet in a nutshell.

"Eliminate processed man made and man altered foods. Don't use sugar. Don't eat grains (they are man altered, but most people don't classify them as such). Don't cook with vegetable oils, and don't use processed vegetable oils. If you are going to cook use coconut oil, palm oil, lard, or grass fed butter (if you aren't lactose intolerant). They are highly saturated fat sources that won't alter from the heat of cooking. If you use vegetable fats for dressings and flavor when not cooking stick to olive oil, macadamia nut oil, walnut oil, and similar not heat produced nut oils. Also nuts, seeds, avocados, and olives are excellent choices. Eat lots of fresh organic vegetables. Eat pasture raised pork and poultry (and their eggs), game meats, grass fed beef, lamb, goat, and their dairy (if not lactose intolerant), wild caught clean water fish. Eat fresh and frozen (if necessary) organic fruit. Moderate alcohol intake to a few drinks per week. Stick with red wine since it has resveratrol, an antioxidant. Sounds weird but get daily sunlight since there is no real food source for Vitamin D. Supplements although not necessary can help. Usually a good whey protein, fat blend, probiotic/enzyme blend, and multi-vitamin/mineral."

That's it, it's really that simple.
